Mixing Solutions, Ltd., the world leader in process mixing technology, announces the availability of its AirWing™ gas injector, which helps coal-fired process plants and power stations reduce some of the costs of their flue gas desulfurization (FGD) operations by reducing energy input.
FGD systems are mandated by the EPA. They reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) waste emitted from plants powered by coal. The AirWing injector, installed in the absorber tower, works in combination with Mixing Solutions’ agitators to improve system efficiency converting calciumsulfite to inert calcium sulfate (synthetic gypsum). It improves air dispersion into the absorber by an average of 25 percent, ensuring the complete oxidation of solids. This proprietary technology, developed at Mixing Solutions’ research and development center, reduces energy consumption and extends blower life. Combined with the agitator system, it helps keep pump suction clear and solids suspended, significantly lowering both planned and unplanned downtime.
Approximately 78 percent of FGD systems in the United States are wet scrubbers using lime or limestone reagents. This method provides compliant SO2 removal at more than 90 percent efficiency. But to achieve this efficiency requires significant energy input.
“A typical large-scale operation may use 2,000 to 3,000 horsepower to inject oxygen into the scrubbing system,” said Bob Dowd. “The AirWing injector’s 25 percent savings then represents a reduction of 500 to 750 hp. These savings can then be channeled back into improving technologies to meet tightening regulations, improving infrastructure or simply reducing MRO costs.”
